Video

Every moving image is telling a story. From the people you choose, the music you use, to the tempo you decide and the graphics you include all contribute to how you creatively convey your message.

As Catch The Fire ambassadors, from the stories you tell you are encapsulating Catch The Fire’s brand essence: presence; encounter; and transformation in all that you communicate.

Intention

Start by identifying your intended response from those you are connecting to when telling your story. A clear understanding of your subject and your target audience will help you navigate imagery, sound, length and the balance between inspiration and information.

Habits

Create curiosity and engage the target audience with an intended call to action.

Your camera view represents what the target audience sees. The camera’s movement and position needs to match the mood, tempo and feel of the content being shown.

Be intentional with your look and feel — a cinematic film flavour, rather than a corporate TV broadcast one.

Choose video frame rates from a base of 24fps or 25fps.

Be authentic with your content. Real people living real moments, create real stories.

Show diversity of age, gender and ethnicity in context to your chosen subject area.

Capture the big picture while caring for the details.

Play with depth and a wide variety of interesting angles and views.

Experiences

Convey the feeling of the moment from the intimate personal space to the large scale one.

Capture the environment and celebrate the unique features of each location.

Place things in context — location, design and recognizable architecture.

Show the full experience of the room and community by using a range of space and contrasting light.

Capture a variety of authentic emotions, gestures and expressions.

For extra content, record the individuals, visibly [video], audibly [audio recording] and through writing.

When recording action scenes like worship, use different frame rates — regular speed and slow motion.

People

Capture authentic moments between people in a variety of environments, inside and outside.

Show people in action from casually chatting over a coffee with a friend to intensely singing as a group during worship.

Capture a wide range of emotions in the moment.

Interviews

Create connection with the subject and their own experience, resulting in an authentic story.

Engage the audience with a sense of wonder.

Use a variety of portrait and landscape compositions to create interest.

Position the camera at eye level showing the subject looking towards the camera, away from the camera and across the camera frame [at 30 degrees]

Use standard imaging rules, such as rule of thirds [unless intentionally creatively choosing to] — avoid centering the subject in frame, leave speaking room for the subject and avoid blowing out highlights [bright spots] in speaking room.

Use simple, large and soft light sources on subjects.

The background needs to be related to the subject where possible but not distracting.

When the subject is addressing the viewer, avoid using a side shot.
