Emergency Aid to the Islands of Lake Victoria, Uganda

In 2023 and 2024, Catch The Fire travelled to 8 islands on Lake Victoria in Uganda, bringing Bibles to people who had never had the Word of God in their hands.

We were able to meet people, build relationships, share the Gospel, and bring the hope of Jesus to communities that are often difficult to reach.

Recently, our amazing contact, Rukundo Abel, reached out to us with heartbreaking news.

A Desperate Need for Food

Abel shared that the situation on the islands had become desperate, with families facing severe food shortages and people going days without eating.

For many families living on the islands, fishing is their main source of income and food. However, with the closure of major fishing activities by the government, including silverfish fishing and other fishing activities, many people have been left without a way to earn their daily living.

As a result, families are struggling to find food.

Children, orphans, elderly people, and other vulnerable members of the community are among those suffering the most.

Abel shared heartbreaking reports with us of children becoming malnourished, parents leaving their families because they feel helpless, and people becoming so desperate that some have tragically taken their own lives. He also reported that people have drowned.

Many families have no food at all. Some have gone days without eating and have no idea where their next meal will come from or how they will feed their children.

The situation was desperate and truly heartbreaking.

Bringing Food and Hope

Because of Catch The Fire’s support, Abel and his team were able to purchase food, prepare meals, and bring immediate relief to the community.

253 children came together, and we were able to cook a meal for them and eat together.

Approximately 150 elderly people were also reached, along with many other vulnerable members of the community.

In total, approximately 890 people were fed!

For people who had been facing hunger and uncertainty, this was more than simply providing a meal. It was an opportunity to remind these communities that they had not been forgotten.

Abel shared these words with us following the food-relief outreach:

“We would like to sincerely thank you for your generous support toward the food-relief outreach on the islands of Lake Victoria in Uganda. Your generosity allowed us to respond to people who are facing a very difficult and painful season.

For those who received food, it was more than just a meal. It was a message that they had not been forgotten.

We are deeply grateful to Catch Fire Ministries for standing with us and helping us respond to this urgent need.

Thank you for helping us put food on the tables of people who had nothing to eat. Thank you for giving hope to children and vulnerable families. And thank you for believing that these communities are worth standing with.

Please Pray for the Islands of Lake Victoria

We are so grateful that, through the generosity of our supporters, we were able to respond when this urgent need arose.

But the need is ongoing.

Please pray for the precious people living on the islands of Lake Victoria—that the Lord would provide food, nourish and sustain families, protect vulnerable children and elderly people, and bring an end to this crisis.

Please pray for Abel and his team as they continue serving these communities.

And please pray that, in the midst of such difficult circumstances, people would encounter the love, hope, and presence of Jesus.
